Iconic British retailer, Fortnum & Mason, has opened its first independent airport shop in Heathrow’s terminal 5 with the emphasis on high quality foods for the traveller.

The store has been closely identified with world travel since 1707 when it would supply hampers full of home comforts for intrepid adventurers. “Now the retailer is in a position to connect with today’s modern global traveller at the world’s busiest port” said a Heathrow statement.

Mixed wicker hampers are still available at the 1,000 square foot outlet but there will be many individual items familiar to shoppers at its Knightsbridge department store including teas, preserves, smoke salmon, caviar, charcuterie plates and fine wines.

The retailer has long been a favourite of the royals and the Duchess of Cornwall even opened a charity section in it this week. It holds several royal warrants and last year opened a similar store in St Pancras station.

Fortnums has also created a new tea blend exclusively for the Terminal 5 store. Called ‘Explorers Blend’ it’s a combination of teas from Sri Lanka, Kenya, China and India.

The store will be open from first to last flight.
