2010 – Police struggle as Brazil’s football stars arrive for Olympics

It’s rare that Heathrow police to struggle to maintain order but they were stretched to the limit as the Brazilian football squad arrived for the 2010 London Olympics.

There were no special arrangements, they just walked through the terminal, past supporters and media to a waiting coach.

All the big names were there Neymar, Oscar, Lucas Moura, Hulk and Thiago Silva.

The Brazilian media had originally been kept behind a barrier but one they got outside the terminal it was a free for all with photographers and cameramen struggling to get usable images of the footballing stars – and football is of course little short of a religion in Brazil.

The excitement was more muted on the return journey. They were pipped to the gold medal by Mexico in a 2-1 final and had to make do with the silver.
