Heathrow expansion could create 50,000 local jobs – report

Thousands of local jobs could be created if Heathrow expansion plans get the go ahead, according to the airport’s management.

It says that studies have shown the development, centred around a third runway, could unlock at least 50,000 jobs in the surrounding area, offering a major boost to employment, skills and opportunities for local people.

The airport says the development of a third runway could support 33,000 additional jobs across its nine local boroughs, alongside at least 17,500 jobs during the peak of construction.

The opportunities are expected to cover a wide range of industries, including engineering, construction, digital technology, logistics, electrical installation, carpentry and airport operations.

In particular it highlights the potential benefits for young people looking to take their first steps into employment.

As part of its plans, Heathrow intends to deliver 5,000 youth apprenticeships, traineeships and other career pathways, helping local residents gain valuable experience and develop skills for the future.

The airport is also planning to introduce a refreshed work experience programme for local students within the next year, giving young people the opportunity to learn more about the careers available within the aviation and construction industries.

A new annual careers event is also planned for March 2027, bringing together employers from across the airport to showcase employment opportunities to people living in the surrounding communities.

Heathrow says the benefits could extend beyond direct airport employment, with thousands of businesses potentially benefiting from contracts and opportunities within the construction and supply chains.

Small and medium-sized businesses are also expected to receive support through an expanded SME Academy, designed to help local companies access opportunities created by the investment.

Becky Coffin, Heathrow’s Director of Communities and Residential Property, said the airport wanted to connect local people with the opportunities expansion could bring.

She said the project represented an opportunity to give the next generation greater access to good-quality, well-paid employment.

However, the proposed expansion is still subject to the planning and approval process, meaning the jobs are potential future opportunities rather than confirmed vacancies.

With Heathrow’s public consultation on its updated expansion proposals running until 22 December 2026, local residents and businesses are being invited to have their say on the plans.

If approved, the project could represent a significant long-term employment opportunity for communities around the airport, helping create new career paths for thousands of people over the coming decades.
