Heathrow grinds to a halt as snow crisis takes hold – 2013

Heavy snow shut both runways as appalling snow conditions wreaked havoc on Heathrow’s operations in January 2013

Snow ploughs were unable to cope with the continuing snowfall and airlines were forced to sit it out and wait until conditions improved.

The effect on passengers was predictably problematical – holidays delayed, appointments lost and tempers frayed.

Here’s a visual image of the conditions in Terminal 5 where British Airways was forced to suspend check-ins and wait for the things to get better.

The airport’s management came under sustained criticism for its response to the weather leading to a significant nvestment in snow clearing equipment.
